With so many fun parties and celebrations this month, here’s what I’m looking forward to the week of 6/10 and beyond.

They’ve done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies. On Saturday, June 14, we’re taking to the streets nationwide. We’re not gathering to feed his ego. We’re building a movement that leaves him behind. The flag doesn’t belong to Donald Trump. It belongs to us. We’re not watching history happen. We’re making it.

6/19 | Popscene @ Brick & Mortar Music Hall | 1710 Mission St, SF | 7 p.m. Doors | $27.53
Based in Nashville, Winona Fighter—frontwoman and multi-instrumentalist Coco Kinnon, lead guitarist Dan Fuson and bassist/producer Austin Luther—formed after Coco moved there from Boston, and made a strong impression with their 2022 debut EP, Father Figure. Three of its songs: “Subaru”, “You Look Like A Drunk Phoebe Bridgers”, and “Wlbrn St Tvrn”, were re-recorded for MY APOLOGIES TO THE CHEF, the band’s debut album, but their power and potency is in no way diminished. In fact, the rage and frustration that courses through them, and which also infuses the band’s energetic and compelling live shows, feels even more visceral, pointed and necessary than before, something that carries over into the other songs too. MY APOLOGIES TO THE CHEF is a wonderfully raw and cohesive reflection on life today that bottles the spirited and cathartic energy of the band’s live shows, as well as the angst and anxiety of being alive.

aja monet
6/22 | The Freight | 2020 Addison St, Berkeley | 7 p.m. | $24-$39
aja monet is a Grammy-nominated Surrealist Blues Poet. Her poems are a work of gravity. They are a fundamental for which all things are attracted, considered upon and enacted towards. Her work moves, constantly, between origin and outcome, allowing them to exist in converse. On her debut album, when the poems do what they do, which was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Spoken Word Poetry Album, we glimpse her indefatigable commitment to speak. Those thematic origins of this album at times center around Black resistance, love and the inexhaustible quest for joy. The songs throughout are insistent and unrelenting, with some reminiscent of jazz club virtuosity and melee while others act as a healing balm in gilead, moving like that of the call to intercessory prayer. aja will be performing with her live band.

Karate
6/23 | Great American Music Hall | 859 O’Farrell St, SF | 8 p.m. | $30-$35
Formed in Boston in 1993 by Geoff Farina, Eamonn Vitt and Gavin McCarthy, Karate added Jeff Goddard on bass in 1995. From punk roots, the band ventured widely, veering into jazz-rock, post-rock and a unique version of slowcore in its progressive indie experimentation. The band re-emerges in Fall 2024 with “Make It Fit”, the band’s first album in 20 years. It doesn’t try to recapture a youthful, DIY-era magic. Instead, it picks up where Karate’s three musicians are today: with a deeper skillset, adult angst cut through with moments of joy, punctuated with searing instrumental performances. Make It Fit is the opposite of a cynical cash-in. It’s daring, requiring a full commitment from band and audience.
Donovan Woods

Honest and unflinching, on “Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now”, his seventh studio album, Woods takes a long look inside and isn’t necessarily thrilled with what he sees. For an artist who isn’t afraid to bare his soul, this is as emotionally gritty as he has ever been.

“The Quiet Diplomat” centers on former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. Along with his family, Secretary General Ban was displaced during the Korean War. The UN Command fought on the side of South Korea and forever changed Ban’s life, inspiring him to become a man who fought for peace throughout his career. Nearly fifty years later, Ban was selected as the 8th Secretary General of the UN. During ten years (two terms), in one of the toughest jobs in the world, “SG” Ban discovered the challenges of international, UN-led diplomacy in an increasingly splintered world. Globally, war and authoritarianism are on the rise. In this documentary, we see Ban’s ‘quiet diplomacy’ as one tactic to promote multilateralism at a time when collaboration between countries is a key to our survival.

Did you know it costs us over $10,000 a month to run Broke-Ass Stuart? And we wouldn’t be here as a resource for you if it weren’t for the over 600 people who support us on Patreon and PayPal. If you find anything in this email helpful or important, we hope you’ll become a member of the Broke-Ass Stuart Patreon. You’ll be helping our team continue to deliver community focused journalism to everyone. You can learn more about why it’s so expensive right here. Plus depending on what tier you join, becoming a Patron gets you anything from random silly postcards from Stuart to free merchandise from our store. |
